Ouse Valley Viaduct Walking Route

Wheat field Ouse Valley viaduct walk

I’ve seen lots of fabulous photos of the Ouse Valley viaduct and have been wanting to check it out for a while – it did not disappoint!
This route is nearly 8km, it’s a nice circular walk and it only takes a couple of hours making it perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

The walk starts in Ardingly Reservoir car park, which is free! It takes you underneath the Ouse Valley viaduct giving you the perfect opportunity to get some great shots! There are also amazing views of the countryside the whole way along the route with ample, scenic places to stop for a picnic. It was a pretty flat, even walk up until the end where there was a bit of a steep hill through one of the fields and it got very muddy – although we have had a lot of rain recently so that’s no surprise. I would always advise wearing walking boots as you never know!

Once you have finished your walk why not enjoy an ice cream or coffee at the cafe overlooking the reservoir as a treat?

I hope you enjoyed my Ouse Valley viaduct walk! Don’t forget to leave a rating and let me know how you got on in the comments!

Start in the Ardingly Reservoir car park and head up towards the reservoir. Follow the path to the left and take the left fork.

Head through the turnstile gate and follow the path down through the fields for approximately 300 meters.

Cross over the small bridge keeping to the path. You’ll then reach a larger bridge that crosses over the River Ouse, follow the path along the river keeping the river on your right.

Once you reach the end of the path, turn right onto Borde Hill Lane and then cross over the road towards the footpath leading to the Ouse Valley viaduct.
You can get some fantastic shots of the viaduct here!

Once you are ready to move on, follow the path leading away from the viaduct and head through the field. You’ll then reach a small farm.

When you reach the farm follow the track round to the right. Keep to the public footpath through the field for approximately 500 meters until you reach the River Ouse again. Cross back over the river keeping to the path.

At the end of the path is a tiny whole in the hedge, squeeze through the gap and follow the unnamed road around to the right.

Once you reach the end of this road cross over London road and the =n turn immediately right onto Cherry Lane. Follow Cherry Lane all the way to the end, approximately 1.5km.

Once you reach the end of Cherry Lane cross back over London Road to follow the footpath down through the field. Keep to the path around the outskirts of these fields for approximately 900 meters.

Follow the path that takes you across the train line on your left and carry on through the wheat field.

Now you are back out onto Borde Lane, cross straight over the lane and follow the narrow road straight ahead for approximately 520 meters.

When you have run out of public road, head over the stile to follow the public footpath for approximately 650 meters.

Head through the gate into a small bit of woodland and keep the path that will take you back to Ardingly reservoir car park.

Congratulations on completing this Ouse Valley viaduct walk, I hope you have enjoyed it!
