Warninglid Walking Route Starting in Handcross

slaugham place circular walks

This Warninglid walking route starts out in Handcross and takes you through my favourite village, Warninglid – it’s just so picturesque it’s hard not to fall in love with it!

We have done this route multiple times because we live in Handcross so it’s great for an afternoon where you don’t really fancy driving and you just want to get up and go! Although, if you are in the car there is plenty of free parking in Handcross!

It’s about 10km and providing the rain has stayed away it’s pretty flat, mud free and not too strenuous. I would call it a circular walking route although you do backtrack at the end for the last 1 – 2km.

There is a pub about halfway, in Warninglid, called The Half Moon which is a great place to stop for a drink or a bite to eat to fuel you up for the journey home, they have a beer garden too so if you’ve gotten lucky with the weather you can enjoy a refreshing drink in the sunshine! Or stop at the small pond and enjoy a road sandwich whilst watching the koi swimming around as we did.

Start this circular walking route in Handcross, there is lots of parking just off of the high street.

Head right down the high street and make a left at the roundabout on Horsham Road. There will be a public footpath sign on your right, so follow that for about 1.5km until you reach Slaugham.

When your reach the crossroads in Slaugham turn left onto Staplefield Road. After about 270 metres there is a public footpath on your right along Staplefield Road signposted, Church Covert. Head through the gate and keep to the path through the woods.

Keep to the path which will take you past Slaugham Place, the path is approximately 650 metres. You will then reach a small road where you will take a sharp right and follow the road to Mill Pond.

At the Pond there is a fork in the road, take the left fork that takes you away from the pond. Follow this path until you reach another ‘fork’ head right this time and continue through the fields.

You will reach a small pond in the middle of the field, head over the little “bridge” and carry on up through the field and through a small patch of woodland. Approximately 1km.

At the end of the field is a gap in the hedge that will take you to Cuckfield Lane, turn right onto the lane and continue into Warninglid.

Once you reach Warninglid there is a small pub on the corner called The Half Moon, this would be a great place to stop for a drink or a bite to eat. Warninglid itself is beautiful so have a little wander (it is tiny) and enjoy.

When you are suitably refreshed and ready to head back you’ll want to head down Slaugham Lane, to the right of The Half Moon and follow the road until you see a gate on your right taking you back through the fields.

Follow the path through the fields and through the farm and keep heading down towards Mill Pond. When you reach Mill Pond turn right and follow the path alongside the pond.

For a slightly different route home, you can follow the path on your left and carry on for approximately 550 metres.

You are now back in Slaugham, where you can continue straight to follow the same path home.

I hope you have enjoyed this Warninglid walking route, let me know how you found it in the comments!
